Learning to Embrace Suffering in the Healthcare Industry

Dr. Sarah Comstock – Associate Professor of Biology

“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.” – Psalm 139: 13-14

When Dr. Sarah Comstock hears people say “I believe in science,” she has questions. “You mean the scientific process? Science is just a process for understanding the world.”

Comstock points out that science and faith are not mutually exclusive. Too many people try to put science in a box, and say it exclusively deals with the natural world. They see science as an end in itself, but the reality is that science is not comprehensive. There are many things it can’t and doesn’t address, including ethics and applications.

“Your worldview is going to shape how you perform science, how you see the results of your science,” Comstock says. That’s why she emphasizes the importance of a solid Christian worldview to her students. She encourages them to explore their faith and scripture and solidify their understanding.

It’s tempting to pursue happiness and avoid pain or sadness, but the Bible teaches that difficult times are actually opportunities for growth. Comstock knows her students face a tough road ahead of them: long, stressful hours full of people who are sick or in pain. A Biblical worldview equips you with the compassion and perspective you need to deal with overwhelming circumstances.
