Taking a Holistic Approach to the Mental Health Crisis

A holistic approach to mental health leads to significant, lasting hope and healing. In this video, Dr. Ryan Connor discusses the importance of a Biblical worldview when practicing as a mental health professional.
“The materialistic worldview says people are like cogs in a machine, if we just provide the right conditions then they will naturally do what’s in their self interest which is good for them and good for the world,” Connor says.
But, what the materialistic worldview is ignoring is the impact of sin. Connor says that Christian counsellors understand they are working in a sinful, broken world, and true redemption and healing is in Christ.
In the Western world, mental health problems are rapidly increasing – suicide rates have climbed over the past ten years, and many people are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses.
“We need Christians to come to Corban and become competent effective counselors who represent Christ,” Connor says.
A Christian university like Corban is essential in battling the problem of mental illness because Corban teaches students how to help people function better and feel better – and also how to find true healing in Christ.
Corban’s students engage with a Biblical framework, including philosophy, history, theology, and end up with a robust understanding of how to think critically and address complex mental health issues.
